Subject: Eyeglass Ministry to Romania
Mr. Kendall - Bro. Allen Atkins from Fairhaven Baptist in Demopolis asked me to write and give you a report of our eyeglass clinics in Romania March 14-17, 2012.
We had a team of 7 people who trained to use the equipment. We did four clinics and rotated jobs for each clinic. We saw a little over 250 people and gave out 237 pair of eyeglasses out of the 1920 we took with us. I would say that the first 3 days we had good matches for most people but by day 4, we were running out of the better matches for most people. The majority of people said they preferred we help their reading vision over their distance vision when we had to choose which to focus on. Most people also said they just wanted to be able to read their Bibles. I think we all really enjoyed working with the people and the equipment and by the second day had figured out how to do everything pretty efficiently.
I had a lady who we had given glasses to one morning come back to the clinic with another lady later in the day. She grabbed a translator and came up to me and said, "I saw the birds in the sky, the blue sky, the green grass, and even flowers blooming in my yard! Please help my neighbor; she wants to see those things, too!" An 80 year old man pulled a tiny New Testament out of his pocket and asked could we help him be able to read it. We had given him a reading sheet, but he said that type wasn't as small as his Bible and he needed to be able to read the tiny print in his Bible. We saw a couple of people with glaucoma, who knew they had glaucoma. We suspected several people had cataracts because they could not see and the autorefractor could not get a reading. A couple of ladies had prescriptions something like -17.00 and -22.00. Two people used the autorefractor and got these same high numbers, and we wondered how these ladies were even walking around with vision that poor. It was difficult to break the news to people when we didn't have glasses for them - they were so hopeful we would be able to help. We saw one person who had that condition where something grows from their tear duct over toward their pupil (can't remember the name for that!).
I'm attaching a few pictures of us using the equipment (if you want more, let me know). We were all very impressed with the way you designed the equipment, software, and the manual. After we watched the live stream training and read the material, some of us were feeling very overwhelmed by the amount of information. But, after getting the equipment and using it on each other, we quickly became more comfortable with it and understood a lot of the training better. I think I speak for all of us when I say what a great ministry you have and we were all privileged to be a part of it. I look forward to working with your ministry again soon.
Thank you and God Bless,
Bonnie Faile
